Their story

Augustus's older brother, born at Westhofen on 14 March 1774 and baptized two days later. On 4 February 1798 he married eighteen-year-old Susanna Neter at St. Mary's Church in Landau, in the Palatinate. She died soon afterward, and they had no children. He married twice more, to Anna Maria Treutel and then to Carolina Philippina Schmelzer, and had at least seven children, some of whom died young. His household appears in the family registers of the city of Mainz, where Augustus married his first wife in 1811. Arnold died a widower at Wehrheim, in the Taunus hills north of Frankfurt, on 21 June 1840. Augustus had named his own third son Arnold in 1825.
