Their story

Born at Pfeddersheim on 28 June 1831, two years after the family moved there from Zell. She was three when they sailed for America. On 23 October 1849 she married Joseph Fougeron, a grocer from an old French farming family of Buffalo, whose grocery and market on Niagara Street stayed in the family for generations. They had one son, Augustus S. Fougeron (1850–1897), and raised Cornelia Doll, the orphaned daughter of Joseph's sister, whose parents had died of cholera. Barbara lived at 127 Niagara Street, the Fougeron store, until her death on 2 June 1906, and was buried beside her husband in the United German & French Cemetery.
