Their story

Arrived in Buffalo in September 1834, just after his ninth birthday. On 17 February 1852 he married Blandina Doll at St. Boniface Church, the German parish in what is now the Fruit Belt, and they started housekeeping at 582 Main Street. The Latin marriage entry names the groom's parents as Augustus and Barbara “ex Zell in Bavaria,” the bride's as Frederic Doll and Maria Anna Stephan of Önsbach in Baden, and the witnesses as Nicolas Fougeron and a Joannes Webner, very likely Arnold's brother John. A city directory lists A. Weppner & Co., butchers, at 422 Main Street, with Arnold living next door at 421. His son August's market was, in the words of an 1898 county history, “established by his father in 1845,” and his son Edward's obituary said he “built up a prosperous meat business in this city.” He came to own a string of meat markets; one of them, at 229–231 Allen Street, housed Mulligan's Brick Bar by 2011. By 1900 three of his sons ran the business as Arnold Weppner's Sons, beef and pork packers on Guilford Street with a shop still at 582 Main. He belonged to the Buffalo Historical Society. He and Blandina had fifteen children, including two sets of twins; six died young, and nine were still living when Edward died in 1914. For his 75th birthday, on 5 September 1900, the family printed an announcement tracing their moves from Zell to Pfeddersheim and Buffalo. He died at home, 1165 Main Street, on 14 March 1903 and was buried at Pine Hill, where his parents lie, three days later.
