Their story
Born at Zell on 19 July 1828, he was six when the family reached Buffalo. A note beside his baptism entry in the Zell register records the family's emigration to America. He worked as a butcher for his father. On 21 July 1853 he married Susanna Germann, or Germain, at St. Boniface Church, with his brothers Jacob and Arnold as witnesses. They had three children: John F. (1854–1931); Jacob, born in 1858, who died at eleven in 1870; and Julia (1863–1922). On 8 August 1861 he volunteered for three years and joined Company I of the 64th New York Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia, on 1 June 1862 and went back to the regiment in March 1863, the month his daughter Julia was born. On 25 August 1864 he was taken prisoner at Reams Station, Virginia, and he never came home. One record says he died a prisoner at Salisbury, North Carolina, on 4 December 1864; another, that he died in a hospital in Washington, D.C., after his release, on 27 March 1865. He isn't buried with his family at Mount Calvary. He left a widow, three young children and his father, who died four years later.
He was very likely the “Joanes Webner” who witnessed his brother Arnold's wedding in 1852. His Civil War papers are held by the family of the WikiTree researcher Maggie N.
