Their story
Augustus and Barbara's first child, born and baptized at Zell on 10 July 1818. She was sixteen when the family reached Buffalo. On 3 March 1840 she married Philip Born at St. Louis Church. He was the son of Augustus's sister Eva Magdalena, so the couple were first cousins, and he owned a brewery on Genesee Street. Philip died suddenly in January 1849 and left her, at thirty, with three young daughters: Barbara (1843–1883), who married Gerhard Lang; Anna Mary (1845–1930); and Emma (1848–1925). A son, Augustin, born in December 1840, isn't named among the children Philip left and probably died young. Her brother Jacob ran the brewery for her until 1865, when it passed to Gerhard Lang, and it grew into the Gerhard Lang Brewery. She died at her home, 1104 Main Street, on Friday, 26 July 1889. Her obituary said she “was well known in German-American circles and was highly esteemed by all who knew her.” Her will divided the $32,000 her husband had left her: a third to Barbara's seven children and two-thirds to her daughters Anna and Emma, with $500 for the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum on Best Street and money for masses for Barbara at St. Louis and St. Michael's churches. Her granddaughter Anna Emma Lang married Edwin G. S. Miller in 1884, very likely the Edwin G. S. Miller who was president of the German-American Bank in 1906, when Anna Maria's nephew Edward A. Weppner was its cashier.
A probate notice gives her death as 28 July; her obituary, which says she died on a Friday, and her headstone give 26 July. WikiTree gives her address as 1004 Main Street; her obituary gives 1104.
