Their story
An 1898 county history says his market was established by his father in 1845 and that August had run it at its present location since 1878, “steadily growing in popularity and patronage.” It called him “a man of strict integrity” with “a high reputation as a business man and citizen.” In 1900 the city directory lists him as proprietor of the Ellicott Square Market, meats and poultry, at 16 South Division Street, with another meat market at 12 South Division. He lived at 22 Holland Place. He married twice: on 13 February 1877 Carolina Christina Barbara Becker, who died in June 1881 after giving him two sons, Arnold Henry and Robert Arthur; and on 14 November 1888 Josephine P. Gebhard, with whom he had nine more children. A 1931 history describes him as a successful retail meat dealer who had lived retired for some years before his death on 13 October 1930. His sons went into banking and the law.
His baptism record, as indexed by FamilySearch, gives his birth as 26 August 1854, and he was baptized the next day; a 1931 history gives 11 August. WikiTree gives 15 October 1930 for his death; the 1931 history, followed here, gives 13 October.
